Smartphones represent 24% of all mobiles sold globally between Jan-Mar’11, which is 15% more as compared to Jan’10-March’10 time period.

Between 1st Jan’11 and 31st March’11, almost 50% of all the 45m mobile phones sold in western Europe support the ability to send and receive email, browse the web, and run mobile applications.

It is being predicted that by an year or so, it will be 50% of all mobile phones being sold. And before 2020, every phone sold will be a smartphone (or probably more).

In the first three months of 2010, 85m PCs were sold worldwide, compared with 55m smartphones. Forecasts recommended that the crossover might happen in 2012. Instead, by the last three months of 2010, 94m PCs were sold – and 100m smartphones. The trend continued in Jan-Mar’11: 82m PCs, 100m smartphones.

This week has witnessed the buttons being launched by both Google and Twitter. LinkedIn will be the next to follow the suit. Does it has to do anything with them floating in public (the IPO’s)?

LinkedIn is now set to follow the ‘Button Trend’ suit by launching its ‘Apply with LinkedIn’ button that will enable third party websites to integrate the functionality within their existing web pages, hence making the process simpler and not missing the existing job seekers.

As an internet trend, most of the people browsing the sites try to read the news, articles, blogs and stories tend to copy past the URL‘s or click the hyperlinked text/ images to reach to the landing page with the relevant content. Tim-Berners Lee saw the value in hyperlinking various parts of a document/ project/ or a separate page in order to increase the functionality, at the same time saving time for the reader of the document/ web page entry. A search for the keyword ‘Hyperlink‘ may return over 36 million results on Google search although its application possibilities in our everyday lives are endless.

I reckon this ‘Button Trend’ in the social media is based upon the internet traffic (over 2 billion links/ images/ text pieces being shared on the internet today) and also the common sense approach to make their overall website offering and brand presence more profitable and viable for the end user. On the other hand, LinkedIn shares are said to be plummeting in the market over the recommended mark. The other day a global finance strategist I was speaking to on phone, said asking anything above $44-45 for LinkedIn shares would be “asking for too much”.

Internet is going to be swamped by growth in internet compatible devices, with the global internet data traffic growing by 400% by 2015 according to Cisco Systems through an industry leading report published on 1st June 2011.

Global Internet traffic would be 966 exabytes (an exabyte equalling a quintillion bytes or 1,024 petabytes) in 2015, and there will be 15 billion network-connected devices, which will bring the device: population ratio to a whooping 2:1, according to the 5th Visual Networking Index Forecast by Cisco at their annual event in Washington, D.C.

Suraj Shetty, Cisco’s VP – Global Service Provider Marketing suggested that each average U.S. resident would have seven networked devices by 2015, compared to 1 networked device per human being on earth. Mobile broadband traffic has been predicted to be 26times of the present volumes.

Global Internet traffic in 2010 was about 20.2 exabytes per month and will increase by 200 exabytes between 2014 and 2015.

The growth in traffic is being driven by tablets, smartphones and online video according to Shetty. An average of 1 million video minutes will cross the Internet every second during 2015, Cisco predicted in its new report, widely referenced in the past by U.S. policymakers.

About 6 percent of all Internet traffic will come from tablets in 2015, meaning that tablets will generate more traffic than all connected devices in 2006, Shetty predicted.

Cisco predicted that global broadband speeds would increase from about 7 Mbps to 28 Mbps, but Carlos Rodriguez, manager of regulatory affairs at Telefónica USA, said the speed increases will depend on several factors. Customers are demanding more bandwidth, but many telecom carriers’ revenues have been flat or declining, he said.

Blair Levin, a communications fellow at think tank the Aspen Institute, called Cisco’s predictions “scary.”

“We actually thought there would be a spectrum crunch before the tablet came out,” said Blair Levin (communications fellow at think tank – The Aspen Institute), who oversaw the U.S. Federal Communications Commission‘s national broadband plan, released in March 2010.

“How are people going to pay for it?”, asked Lewin. He also pointed out that slow economic growth would certainly have an impact on increasing the broadband speeds.

I can surely see where Cisco is going with their annual exercise patterns of predicting trends. They probably are saying (in latent meaning), “we are industry leaders” and “buy internet compatibility/ enhancing devices with Cisco brand”. Today at 10 AM Pacific Time, Apple held a music event just as every year, when they revealed new devices and softwares.

I. iOS 4.1 and 4.2 for iPhone, iPod and iPad:

Apple introduced iOS 4.1 today which will have the following new features:

1. Game Centre where users can play single player and multi-player games.

2. Special feature for your iOS device’s camera, where your pictures will be more crisp and clear due to additional processing done while taking the picture. When you will turn on this amazing new feature, your iOS device’s camera will take 3 different pictures of the object: i. In Low exposure, ii. In Normal Exposure & iii. High Exposure. Then these three images will be merged together within the software itself, to give you a never-before-seen crisp and clear quality.

3. Bug fixes for Proximity sensor issue, Bluetooth and many other smaller issues.

While all these functionalities will come to iPhone and iPod’s this week itself through the iOS 4.1 launch, iOS 4.2 will bring the same and more to the iPad in November 2010.

II. iTunes 10:

Today was an important day since the launch of iTunes. Apple introduced a new feature called ‘PING’ which is an embedded social networking from within iTunes, for artists and friends, who want to share music and events related to music through iTunes. Thus would provide them a common platform to share all such things and more through iTunes itself. PING is not just available on iTunes on computers, but it will also be available on iPhones and iPods.

III. Apple TV:

Apple TV has been there in the market for over 4 years but it had not done too well because of high cost and low usability issues. Steve announced today that Apple TV will now be available only at $99 instead of earlier price of $299. It is available from this week itself as well.

IV. New Lineup of iPods:

All three apple iPod categories: ‘iPod Shuffle‘, ‘iPod Nano‘ and ‘iPod Touch‘ have been made remarkably meaner and meatier despite making them thinner and giving them more sexy form factor.

This has always been an interesting event for Apple and today’s event was no exception as it was concluded by a guest performance from 7 Grammy Awards winning band COLDPLAY’s lead man.

Many consumers having updated their devices to iOS 4.0.2 in the recent past found that all their jailbreaking efforts had been gone in vain. If reuters are to be believed, Apple is getting more keen on providing more open iPhone 4 and other iOS enabled devices like iPad and iPod. This would mean people being less keen to Jailbreak their devices, in turn, lesser number of people who would like their devices to go out of warranty (as clearly stated by Apple Inc.).

As per cultofmac and Apple‘s own discussion forums, In the past, a leading jailbreaking solution called ‘Jailbreakme’ had actively provided jailbreak solutions for iOS 4.0.1, but the security gaps were fixed by the iOS 4.0.2 recently, causing all iOS enabled devices to be reset to factory settings, and hence nullifying all jailbreak activities on these devices.

With Apple announcing it’s global musical event on 1st Sep’ 2010, experts also suggest that there may be an announcement of iOS 4.1 update along with the new iPod unveiling and more news on white iPhone on your way. So watch out for the updates on your iPhones, iPad’s and iPod’s… and hackers, no recommedations for you (officially).
